June 12th 2009 - Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall launches British Food Fortnight's 2009 educational activities at The Compass Children's Centre in Gloucester

British Food Fortnight is delighted to announce that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall will launch British Food Fortnight's 2009 educational activities when she opens The Compass Children's Centre in the Coney Hill area of Gloucester on Friday 26th June. The organisers of British Food Fortnight are based in Gloucestershire and they have teamed up with local celebrity chef Rob Rees and his charity, The Wiggly Worm, to give cookery lessons to fathers of the children who attend the centre.

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will attend the first cooking lesson where six fathers will be taught how to cook recipes that will help them feed their children more healthily within a credit crunch budget and will give them an appreciation of good British raw ingredients rather than processed meals. The cooking lesson that will be viewed by The Duchess is one of a number being conducted at the Centre in preparation for a ’Family Feast of British Food‘ to celebrate British Food Fortnight in September when parents will cook a British meal for all the families using the Centre.

As well as cooking lessons, the fathers will be taken on shopping tours during the build-up to the national food promotion to help them find more healthy and more British food in their local shops. The local Budgens store in Barnwood is donating all the ingredients for free for the cooking lesson and the Family Feast as part of its sponsorship of British Food Fortnight.

Her Royal Highness is a great supporter of British Food Fortnight having presented the winners of the event's 2008 school cooking competition with their prize earlier this year.

Susie Pasotti, Manager of the Centre says: ”Everyone at The Compass Children's Centre is excited that Her Royal Highness is attending our Open Day. Fathers of children attending the centre have boldly taken up the challenge of learning to cook so that they can prepare a huge family feast during British Food Fortnight. Having Her Royal Highness attend their first cooking lesson gives them a huge incentive to learn to cook well!“ And Rob Rees MBE, CEO of the Wiggly Worm Charity that is conducting the cooking demonstration, adds: ”We look forward to supporting British Food Fortnight and are delighted to showcase the work of our charity to Her Royal Highness.“

For security reasons your name and publication must be on the official invitation list to gain access to this event.
